Kannemeyer Primary School’s “Reading Room” Launch

The ability to read is one of the most essential skills a child has to master in order to secure a successful future beyond their school career. Thanks to the support of MySchool / MyVillage / MyPlanet and Sabinet Chairperson’s Fund, acquiring this vital skill has now become a lot easier for the learners at Kannemeyer Primary School, in Grassy Park Cape Town. The Kannemeyer Primary School’s once under-resourced and out-dated library now boasts a brand new feel from the make-over it has undergone. Dubbed “The Reading Room”, it is strategically positioned at the front of the school’s entrance, complete with a wide range of books, study tables, reading area, new shelving, beautiful Muriel and more. Ridwan Samodien, Principal at Kannemeyer says they are thrilled to be amongst the privileged 20% of schools in the country who have an active school library. “I am delighted that our learners, teachers and the broader community will have access this much needed facility. Our aim is to instill a love for reading and afford our learners the opportunities to experience the joy of reading,” said Ridwan. MySchool’s Marketing Manager, Helene Brand says they believe their generous funding towards the refurbishment will not only be a great benefit to the learners, but will also inspire other schools to do more. “The MySchool fundraising programme has been assisting schools for over 14 years. We are pleased when we see schools pro-actively take on the challenges within their community. We trust this library will be a great benefit to the learners as well as the community”, said Helene. Since 2010 Kannemeyer Primary has been involved in a large scale change project called School @ the Centre of Community (S@CC), an initiative aimed at creating thriving schools at the centre of the communities they serve. This initiative which is run and founded by Symphonia for South Africa facilitates partnerships between schools and businesses. Two years ago founder of this local NPO, Louise van Rhyn partnered with Ridwan and became his ‘Partner for Possibility’, a partnership Ridwan believes has enabled the school to experience new possibilities. “An investment in education is an investment in our future. Knowing that we have organisations who care enough, and who are willing to share the enormous task of educating our children with us, has restored our faith and given us hope for the future,” Ridwan added. The Sabinet Chairperson’s Fund has over the past years been supporting a number of school development projects and this year they awarded funding for book shelving and carpets in the make-over of the Kannemeyer’s library. “We are proud to be part of this project and we are confident that this library will benefit the community going forward,” said Shamila Ramjawan from the Sabinet. Kannemeyer Primary School and Symphonia for South Africa would like to invite you to the launch of the refurbished Reading Room (library) on the 8th of November.
